Colouring

back almost black or from grey-green to blue-green; whitish belly; scutes and scales large along the entire lateral line.

Geographical distribution

Eastern Atlantic (from Norway to Senegal), Mediterranean, Black Sea (rare), Western Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Western Pacific.

Bathymetric distribution

pelagic found on sandy bottoms at a depth ranging from 100 to 200 m, but also found at depths of more than 500 m.

Fishing

pelagic trawls, purse seines using light, lines, longlines, spinning nets.

Good time for fishing

especially in the cold season

Commercial interest

extraordinarily important.
